Chapter 3 – What You Need to Know Before Buying a Guinea Pig

You are faced with a wide selection of guinea pigs to choose from for your or your child’s pet. In this chapter, we will talk about four things to consider before you buy a guinea pig: 1) Allergies to guinea pigs 2) Upkeep of the guinea pig, 3) The best type of guinea pig for a young child’s first pet, 4) The best combination of guinea pigs.

Lifestyle Match

Allergies do not actually come from touching hair, but rather from proteins that the animal’s body releases through its skin, urine and saliva. There is no simple way for you to know if you are allergic to a guinea pig, except by living with one for a while. Even if you are not allergic to dogs and cats, you may be allergic to guinea pigs and vice versa. If you find that you are sneezing, your eyes are itching and you are coughing, then you may be allergic to your guinea pig. An allergist can give you a treatment for this that lasts about eighteen months. In the meantime, check the guinea pig’s bedding to make sure that it is clean and try not to touch the guinea pig during this time. You can also install an HEPA filtered air purifier to reduce the microscopic pollution in the air of your home.

While all guinea pigs are loveable and make great pets, to chose the one that is best for your lifestyle consider asking yourself these questions before you buy a guinea pig:

1) Will a small child be holding the guinea pig often?

Silky guinea pigs, while soft and pretty, are often slippery. A little child attempting to hold the animal may very well loose their grip. This, in turn, can frighten the guinea pig enough that it might bite. That is why a rough-haired guinea pig may be the best choice for your child’s pet. Additionally, male guinea pigs are more excitable and a little big larger than female guinea pigs.
